On Sheema Kirmani at Lal Shahbaz Qalandar’s shrine

An iconic image of Sheema Kermani dancing at the dhammal in Sehwan’s Lal Shahbaz Qalandar shrine. There are those who will say this is not the way of Islam, that women don’t participate in dhammal. But in Islam and particularly in Sufi Islam, men & women are equal in the eyes of God. Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai wrote Sufi poetry about the Seven Queens, who moved mountains, fought and died for love. Do not for one minute try to tell me that women have no place in the rituals of the shrine. Our humanity transcends our gender. At the same time our gender informs our humanity. It is only when men and women join together will this battle be won.
