Today Sister Ruth Pfau gets a state funeral. She is the third civilian after Edhi sb and Muhammed Ali Jinnah to be so honored. And given that she was a Christian, a German, a woman and a nun, I think this says a lot about Pakistan’s complicated and complex attitudes towards women, minorities, and foreigners. We know that none of this need get in the way of service to the nation, and yet we cannot accord members of these groups equal rights and protection under the law. It is a paradox that generations after us will have to solve.
